John and Zeke’s slated to open soon
The eagerly anticipated opening of John and Zeke’s bar in their new location is nearly at hand. New owners, Tony Dueñas and Mike Carver, are waiting for the liquor license, slated to arrive “any day.”
With accouterments, including the boar’s head, barstools and bar, from their old location at 111 Plaza St. in place they are ready to open the 800-square-foot bar to the public. Their new location is 420 Healdsburg Ave.
“We’re family,” said Neil Cronin of Dueñas, Carver and Peter Ryan, bartender, bouncer and go-to guy for all the partners involved. “This transition wouldn’t have happened if I didn’t get sick, but I did and it’s happening.”
Cronin’s vision of the transition developed over the course of the summer, then he showed the plans to Carver, Dueñas and Ryan. Cronin will continue to be involved in the business.
“These three are taking it forward,” said Cronin.
“John and Zeke’s is part the community and the ownership really belongs to Healdsburg,” said Carver.
“The town has come together, first for Neil, then to relocate, help clean and put the building together, the whole community has been behind us,” said Carver. “This is the best of Healdsburg.”
While some construction will be ongoing to finish the back room, which will be available for private parties and rentals, the service area, bar and restrooms are complete. The reconfigured hallway allows access from the front of the bar to the rear “party room.” The room can hold 40 people for a sit down event. The back room does not have a full kitchen but a roll-up door allows access to caterers and their trucks. Architect Alan Cohen designed the interior of the building.
The restrooms are larger and now handicapped accessible.
John & Zeke’s anticipates a soft opening and hopes to be open by Christmas. They plan a grand opening after January 1.
