“Breaking Away” at Spoke Folk on Saturday
Healdsburg’s Spoke Folk Cyclery will complete its Winter Film Series Saturday night, Feb. 23, with the showing of the classic cycling film “Breaking Away.”
The 1979 film starred Dennis Christopher, Dennis Quaid, Daniel Stern (in his first film role) and Jackie Earle Haley as local kids from a small Indiana town who form a cycling team to compete in a big local race. The film was nominated for five Academy Awards including Best Director (Peter Yates) and Best Film and won the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay (Steve Tesich).
Spoke Folk’s film series was launched in the fall as part of an effort to raise funds for the Sonoma County Bike Coalition and the Healdsburg Mountain Bike Team. Spoke Folk helps sponsor the HHS mountain bike team by providing training, repairs and equipment. Last week’s showing of the film “Bullhead” drew 25 people — the largest crowd so far for the event which has been held Saturdays at the shop, located at 201 Center Street. Admission is $5 and guests are encouraged to bring a chair.
This week’s film, which is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m., will be preceded by a pre-film social starting at 6 p.m. — drinks and snacks will be provided. For more information, contact Spoke Folk at (707) 433-7171
