Healdsburg Fire Department to hold open house

An opportunity to get close to fire engines and firefighters will be made available when the Healdsburg Fire Department holds an open house to mark Fire Prevention Week.

The Oct. 8 event will give families and kids a chance to mingle with firefighters and watch fiery demonstrations.

"Kids love to get on the old fire truck. It's a very family-oriented open house," said Fire Inspector Ruben Mandujano. "And there's all kinds of tools for people to look at."

He said the event also provides opportunities to learn about the explorer program designed to give youths for ages 14 to 21 exposure to becoming firefighters.

The demonstrations start at 10 a.m. with depictions forcible entry, roof ventilation and vehicle extrication.

There will be tours of the fire station, fire extinguisher training and fire prevention education.

A barbecue lunch provided by the Healdsburg Reserve Firefighters Association will be served at noon.

The event, which ends at 2 p.m., will be attended by members of Cal Fire, the Healdsburg Police Department and Bell's Ambulance.

The fire house is at 601 Healdsburg Ave.
