Healdsburg: Wearing Prada, eating tapas

Sunday, June 19th, 2011 | Posted by

In another volley of East Coast prose, Wall Street Journal columnist Jay McInerney swooped down on Healdsburg for a June 18 profile of David Ramey, and boy does he like the winemaker/owner of Ramey Cellars.

He likes Healdsburg, too, calling it a “ridiculously picturesque town.” From his seat at Spoonbar, McInerney sees a fashionable, exuberant crowd and writes, “After years as a sleepy backwater frequented by farmers and ex-hippies, Healdsburg is suddenly the kind of place where you see people in Prada eating tapas.”

Does Prada make bib overalls? Who knew?

Well, I’m a fifth generation native and I’m still making the same spaghetti sauce from a multi-generational family recipe. Is that considered too “hick” for our current “chic” town?

  • Kyle

Yeah, but it was better as “a sleepy backwater frequented by farmers and ex-hippies,” compared to what is is evolving into: yuppieville; well, maybe not the ex-hippies.

If Jay McInerney was looking for farmers, Spoonbar wasn’t the place to look for them, and in town wasn’t really the place to look for them, even at a winery isn’t the best place to look for them. He should have tried looking on A FARM. That’s where most of the farmers I know hang out.

    Well put! LOL

Let these “Prada eating tapas” people go to a real farm and see what it’s like to do manual labor. Their smooth hands, and weak backs wouldn’t last 10 minutes. All you’d be hearing is; Oh, I’m not going to do that, I’ll get dirty, or, I’m not going to get my $2,000.00 shoes all dirty.

LEAVE OUR ONCE “Sleepy backwater frequented by farmers and ex-hippies” TOWN ALONE!

GOT BACK TO YOUR CEMENT CITIES!!!

As a 30 year resident of Healdsburg, I am disgusted by the “yupped out” image perpetuated by the press. We are an agricultural town with FARMS and regular hard working folks who are for the most part, absent as we have been over run by the “Prada” wearing, “tapas” eating tourists who have turned our town into something most locals hate. Great for sales tax, but who lives here who wears Prada? Is it even possible to buy Prada in Sonoma County? Would you even recognize Prada if you saw it? Does anyone really care what the tourists wear? Why not talk about real life in Healdsburg instead of perpetuating an image that is only surface deep? More of this kind of press is what we don’t need.
